Selling on eBay: is it right for your brand and international growth plans?

Many brands think of Amazon first when considering international marketplace growth. eBay also deserves an assessment. The question is which products you want to sell, which customers you want to reach and how the channel fits your existing business.

In short

Assess eBay through the combination of product range, target market and operational feasibility. Investigate what buyers are looking for, how your offer compares with alternatives and what remains after relevant costs. Start with one market and a focused product selection. Expand when both the commercial results and the operating model support it.

Give eBay a clear role in your channel strategy

“Start selling on eBay” is not yet a growth plan.

A useful channel decision begins with a specific opportunity. You may see international demand for a product group. Customers may search precisely for a particular replacement part. Or you may want to establish whether selected products can reach additional buyers.

Define what eBay should add to your webshop and other marketplaces. That could mean new reach or a different role for part of the assortment.

Make the objective specific. For example: test whether a selected accessory range can generate sufficient demand and contribution in Germany to justify ongoing management.

That objective guides product selection, investment and evaluation. It also prevents technical integration availability from becoming the main reason to add the channel.

Assess the fit with your product range

A platform’s reputation says little about the opportunity for an individual product.

eBay also supports fixed-price listings. A strategy for new branded products does not have to revolve around auctions.

Investigate how buyers approach your product group. Do they search broadly by category, or specifically by brand, model, size or compatibility?

The answer affects what your offer needs to explain.

Products meeting a precise search need

For parts or accessories, demand may depend heavily on the intended application. Buyers need to establish whether the product fits and what the purchase includes.

Complete specifications and clear presentation deserve particular attention.

New branded products

Investigate how you can demonstrate differentiation. Compare price, contents, quality, delivery and the information provided by competing offers.

A brand name alone may not justify a higher price.

A separate role for part of the assortment

If you intend to offer excess stock or refurbished products, agree how that activity relates to your regular range.

These examples are opportunities to investigate. They do not establish that the categories mentioned will automatically be profitable on eBay.

Choose a market and selling approach

Making products available internationally is different from building an offer for a particular local market.

eBay distinguishes between international selling from an existing site and creating listings directly on an international eBay site. The appropriate approach depends on your target market and intended setup.

Start with one market supported by evidence. Germany may deserve investigation if you already have customers, distribution or specific demand signals there. It should not become the default choice without assessment.

Review local search terms, competing offers, price levels and delivery expectations. Translating a Dutch listing is only part of the preparation.

Also check whether your product version fits the market. Instructions, sizing, package contents and application information may all matter.

Our marketplace selection framework helps compare eBay with other potential investments.

Protect your brand and price positioning

A new channel needs to fit the wider business.

Decide which products you offer through each channel and how price differences can be explained. Packaging, service or delivery differences may be relevant, but they should remain understandable to the customer.

Consider the total customer price, including shipping. A low item price with expensive delivery can create a different competitive position from the one suggested by your internal price list.

Use clear images and consistent product information. Even a limited pilot should explain what buyers can expect from your brand and product.

If excess stock or refurbished products have a separate role, describe their condition and package contents explicitly. Ambiguity can generate sales that later create additional returns and customer enquiries.

Calculate contribution after relevant costs

Assess the economics by product group and target market.

Check the applicable eBay fees for your selling site, category, account and selected services. Include advertising costs according to the model you actually use.

Then add your own product, shipping and return costs. Keep fixed expenses separate so you can see how much contribution the channel needs to generate to cover them.

A fictional example

A product generates average revenue of €60 excluding VAT, adjusted for discounts and expected refunds. Product costs are €28. Platform costs, fulfilment, shipping and additional return costs total €18.

That leaves €14 before advertising and fixed expenses. At average acquisition costs of €5 per order, the remaining contribution is €9.

If a lower price is needed to generate sales, recalculate the result. A small price reduction can remove a substantial share of the contribution.

These figures are illustrative and do not represent current eBay fees. Positive contribution per order does not establish that the channel will recover fixed costs and the launch investment.

Build a workable operating model

Initial listings can be prepared manually. Sustained growth also requires a clear approach to stock, prices and orders.

Assign responsibility for:

  • Product information and local content.

  • Availability and pricing updates.

  • Order processing and shipping.

  • Customer enquiries and returns.

  • Monitoring and improvement.

Check the relevant product and market requirements before listing. Make sure the team knows where exceptions go and who has authority to decide how they are handled.

Automate recurring tasks where this demonstrably reduces work. Keep human attention available for product questions and situations that do not fit a standard process.

Test the channel with a clear decision in mind

Choose a coherent product group and record what you need to learn.

A useful pilot question is: can we sell these products at a defensible price, with sufficient contribution and manageable operational work?

Assessment

What to investigate

Product demand

Does the offer reach relevant buyers and generate sales?

Competitive position

Why would customers choose your offer at this price?

Financial contribution

What remains after the agreed costs?

Operations

Can orders and exceptions be handled reliably?

Agree the budget, responsibilities and review date. Record promotions, stock changes and other circumstances that may affect the results.

Limited sales need investigation: is the constraint reach, the offer, information or underlying demand? Strong sales also need examination if contribution or delivery falls short.

Compare expansion with improvements available in your existing channels. Our guide to prioritising e-commerce growth supports that decision.

When strategic support can help

The difficult decision is often whether the channel deserves investment, rather than how to publish a listing.

BND helps define eBay’s role within your wider e-commerce approach. We connect product selection, market choice, costs and operations with one commercial objective.

Through Growth Strategy, we make that assessment concrete and turn it into a workable plan. This supports focused testing and informed decisions about further investment.
